The Anambra State Government has intensified efforts to address the persistent rise in house rents across the state, particularly in major urban centres such as Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia, with plans to introduce measures aimed at regulating rental charges and protecting tenants from exploitation.
The move comes amid growing public concern over the soaring cost of accommodation, which has placed significant financial pressure on civil servants, students, traders and low-income earners. In recent years, rent and related charges imposed by landlords and property agents have increased sharply, making decent housing increasingly unaffordable for many residents.
As part of efforts to address the situation, the Anambra State Government is working on a legal and regulatory framework that will check arbitrary rent increases, standardize agency and related fees, and promote fairness in the housing sector. The proposed reforms are expected to complement the state’s broader housing development agenda, including plans to partner with private investors to deliver affordable housing projects across the state.
The State Government have expressed concern that unchecked increases in rent are contributing to the rising cost of living and creating hardship for residents, especially in urban areas experiencing rapid population growth and increasing demand for housing. The proposed legislation is expected to establish guidelines for rent reviews and address excessive charges often levied on tenants by property agents and landlords.
Stakeholders have largely welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that could restore balance to the housing market while ensuring that both tenants and property owners operate within a transparent and regulated framework.
If successfully implemented, the policy is expected to bring relief to thousands of households across Anambra State and contribute to the government’s vision of creating a more livable and economically inclusive environment for residents.
