The Anambra State Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, on Saturday, December 11th, 2021, rescued from begging syndicates, Sixteen children of different age groups.
The rescue was necessitated through the social welfare department of the ministry, following reports by concerned citizens, of number of children being deployed by adults to seek for alms from passers-by in major roads and pedestrian bridges across the state.
Following series of reports, the State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, personally mounted surveillance at Aroma and Unizik temporary site Junctions to observe first hand, the activities of these syndicates endangering live of these children who are being denied their childhood for the purpose of alms seeking.
Consequently, the Honorable Commissioner mandated the social welfare department to effect the rescue of the children, arrest and prosecute the syndicates whom most of them have been arrested and counseled in previous raids by the ministry.
The task force succeeded in arresting four adults and the rescue of Sixteen children between a week and 14 years of age.
