Crystal Meth or Methamphetamine popularly referred as Mkpuru Mmili is a strong and highly addictive drug that affects the central nervous system, There is no legal use for this drug anywhere in Nigeria.
This chemical substance comes in clear crystal chunks or shiny blue-white rocks. Also called “ice” or “glass,” it’s a popular party drug. Usually, users smoke crystal meth with a small glass pipe, but they may also swallow it, snort it, or inject it into a vein. People say they have a quick rush of euphoria shortly after using it. But it’s dangerous. It can damage your body and cause severe psychological problems.
Over the last couple of months this addictive chemical has seen the consumption in Anambra State increase astronomically with the youths taking a huge chunk of the population consuming this hard drug, this has caused mental breakdown of a huge number of individuals.
This recent sad development has caused the youths of various communities in Anambra have taken it upon themselves to tackle this menace by resorting to self help which is the traditional old way of handling individuals who involve themselves in crime during the olden days.
These youth association have gone after the consumers of this hard drug which will in turn which lead them to the dealers, these people are given the treatment of criminals which include flogging publicly and banishing of the dealers from the affected communities.
While speaking with the youths who are championing this course, they said that the government has failed in curbing this menace as the agencies saddled with the responsibility of dealing with this kind of crime like the Nigerian Police and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have failed and there are no working rehab homes where the consumers can be treated therefore this is the only option left to them.
The government of Anambra State should as a matter of urgency address this ravaging menace as the ripple effect will be enormous if not curbed now.
