The Primate of All Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Most Rev’d Henry Chukwudum Ndukuba, has directed The Most Rev’d Alexander C. Ibezim, Archbishop of the Province of the Niger and Bishop of the Diocese of Awka, to proceed on a six-month leave.

The directive, contained in an official letter dated October 13, 2026, stems from recent developments in the Diocese of Awka involving allegations that have raised concerns regarding the reputation and integrity of the Church.

Administrative Action and Investigation

According to the document, the decision follows reports submitted by administrative panels and a recent Visitation Team led by the Dean of the Church of Nigeria, as well as a meeting held on October 9, 2026, between Primate Ndukuba and Archbishop Ibezim.

The church leadership emphasized that the move is purely an administrative step aimed at facilitating an impartial investigation and restoring peace:

“Please note that this is an administrative action and does not constitute a disciplinary sanction but to facilitate impartial enquiry into the state of affairs of your Diocese and to promote peace and reconciliation.”

The leave takes effect immediately from the date of the letter for an initial period of six months, subject to review.

Interim Leadership Appointed

To maintain oversight during this period, the Primate has appointed The Rt. Rev’d Samuel Ezeofor, Bishop of the Diocese of Aguata, as the Supervising Bishop of the Diocese of Awka and Coordinating Bishop of the Province of the Niger.

Archbishop Ibezim has been directed to effect an immediate handover of all episcopal responsibilities and oversight. During his leave, he is barred from officiating in any activities of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), the Province of the Niger, or the Diocese of Awka.

The order was issued pursuant to Section 29(1) of Chapter V of the Constitution and Canons of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 2020.
