Police operatives in Anambra State have busted an alleged child exploitation ring following a targeted raid in Achalla, Awka North Local Government Area. The operation resulted in the rescue of a heavily pregnant 15-year-old girl and the arrest of a prime suspect.
The raid, which took place on the evening of Wednesday, June 17, 2026, was initially launched by operatives from the Achalla Divisional Police Headquarters targeting local youth networks linked to the consumption of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as Mkpuru Mmiri.
The Raid and Rescue
According to an official statement released on Friday by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the crack team acted on actionable intelligence gathered over time regarding illicit drug activities around St. Paul’s Secondary School in Achalla.
During the sweep of the area, police officers intercepted a middle-aged man caught in a compromising situation with the underage girl. The suspect, identified as Tochukwu Nwora, was immediately taken into custody on allegations of defilement and child exploitation, while the minor was removed from the scene under protective custody.
Systemic Exploitation Uncovered
Preliminary investigations by the command paint a grim picture of systemic abuse. Police reports indicate that the 15-year-old victim had been repeatedly defiled by multiple adult males across various communities in the state, including Nando, Nteje, and Achalla.
Investigators revealed that the perpetrators systematically preyed on the teenager’s vulnerability, using paltry sums of money to exploit her over an extended period.
The victim has since been moved to the Police Hospital in Awka, the state capital, where she is currently undergoing comprehensive medical examinations, prenatal care, and psychological evaluation.
CP Orders Deep Dive into Guardians’ Accountability
Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikoye Orutugu, ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a rigorous, top-to-bottom inquiry.
Crucially, CP Orutugu has directed investigators to expand their scope to determine the level of culpability or negligence on the part of the victim’s parents or guardians.
The Command maintains a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of child abuse, exploitation, and violence against minors,” SP Ikenga stated, emphasizing the CP’s directive to ensure that every individual complicit in the teenager’s ordeal faces the full weight of the law.
The police command confirmed that the primary suspect, Nwora, is currently assisting detectives with vital information. A manhunt has been launched to track down and apprehend the remaining adult males implicated in the cross-community abuse network. Further updates are expected as the SCID finalizes its case files for prosecution.
