A dramatic plot by a 21-year-old mother to sell her newborn baby daughter has been smashed by law enforcement after a sharp-eyed citizen blew the whistle on the secret deal.
Operatives from the Oyi Divisional Headquarters of the Anambra State Police Command intercepted the young mother in Igbariam, rescuing the infant before any exchange could take place.
The Secret Pregnancy and the Escape
The investigation revealed a tangled web of secrecy. The 21-year-old woman, originally from neighboring Imo State, had managed to completely hide her pregnancy and subsequent birth from her parents.
Desperate to keep the situation hidden, she fled her family home in Imo State and traveled down to Igbariam, Anambra, where she holed up at a friend’s residence. It was from this hideout that she allegedly began orchestrating the sale of her newborn daughter.
Whistleblower Saves the Day
The young mother’s plans crashed on Friday, June 19, 2026, when a concerned community member noticed something amiss and alerted the authorities.
Acting on the tip-off, police officers swarmed the location, securing both the infant and the mother.
A Surprise Reunion
Instead of a cold cell, the police chose a path of immediate family intervention. Investigators tracked down and contacted the young woman’s parents back in Imo State, who rushed down to Anambra.
In an emotional twist, the police facilitated a full reunion, handing the mother and child back over to the family to ensure they receive immediate emotional support, proper care, and strict supervision.
“Every child deserves protection from abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and neglect,” said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, as he commended the public for speaking up. “The vigilance of our citizens is what made this successful intervention possible.”
While the baby is now safe under family care, the case is far from closed. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that investigations are aggressively ongoing to uncover the full circumstances of the attempted sale and to track down any potential buyers or traffickers involved.
