The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has announced disciplinary measures following the death of Miss Isabella Chioma Ajana, a 100-level student of the Faculty of Law.

In a statement signed by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, the University said it has suspended the doctors, nurses, and security personnel on duty at the institution’s Medical Centre on the day the student was rushed there. The suspension will last for three months, during which investigations into the incident are expected to be concluded.

The University also directed the management of ELMADA Hostel, where the late student resided, to relieve the Supervisor on duty of her role. According to the statement, the Supervisor failed to return with the spare key to the student’s room after repeated calls, a situation that contributed to the delay in accessing the victim.

Prof. Arinze-Umobi stated that UNIZIK will re-evaluate its relationship with ELMADA Hostel with a view to ensuring international best practices in student accommodation facilities.

She reassured the University community and the general public of management’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of care and safety for students, noting that her administration is focused on “feeling the pulse of the students, staff and finding solutions.”

The Acting Vice-Chancellor extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and pledged that the University would work to prevent a recurrence of such incidents in the future.
