The Anambra State Government, through the ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, has intervened in the case of a Ninety- Eight – Year, old widow, Mrs Veronica Nwafor, whose house under construction was demolished by her aggrieved relatives, at Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.
The intervention by the state government on Friday, January 28th, 2022, was necessitated following a video that trended on social media platforms on January 24th, 2022, which was seen by Governor Willie Obiano and his wife Dr Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano who consequently sent the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue to get involve and ensure that the nonagenarian got deserving justice.
Consequently, The Commissioner Lady Ndidi Mezue alongside the Transition Committee Chairmen of Orumba North and South, Mrs Ify Obinabo and Chief Cyprian Okereke paid a surprise visit to the crime scene, where relatives gave account of the incident that shocked the community.
Recalling the incident, Mr Linus Nwafor who is constructing the four bedroom bungalow for his nonagenarian step mother, explained that, his late mother and the step mother lived in a thatched hut in the piece of land where the demolished building is sited, saying he undertook the construction of the house because his step mother, had lived with her married daughter for more than thirteen years, hence his reason to build her a house that was maliciously demolished by Children of his uncle Mr Simon Nwafor.
Lady Mezue, while addressing members of the community including the chairman of the Umunna, appreciated the state Governor and his wife for intervening in the matter, she described the incident as pathetic, assured that the re-construction of the building will commence immediately and the victim will get justice,She equally urged women to speak out when
