A one-storey commercial building housing eight shops collapsed on Saturday night near the Building Materials International Market along the Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway in Idemili North Local Government Area. No casualties or injuries have been reported, though structural damage and destroyed inventory are estimated to value millions of naira.
The incident occurred during a weekend of prolonged, heavy rainfall across Anambra State. According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the building’s foundation had been progressively compromised by severe soil erosion and inadequate local drainage infrastructure. The structure was reportedly situated directly over a critical junction where underground drainage channels from both sides of the expressway converge, creating a bottleneck that obstructed natural stormwater runoff.

Regulatory Investigation Underway
Anambra State government officials inspected the site on Monday to assess the debris and evaluate the structural integrity of adjacent buildings. Speaking on condition of anonymity, an official confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine whether the building possessed valid planning permits and complied with state engineering standards.
“Preliminary findings indicate extensive structural damage,” the official stated. “We are working to establish the exact cause of the collapse and determine whether regulatory procedures were followed.”
State authorities have advised local residents and business owners to remain vigilant and report visible signs of structural distress, as heavy seasonal rainfall continues to impact vulnerable infrastructure across the region.
Efforts to reach the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, for an official statement regarding security and salvage efforts at the site were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
