The National Elections Umpire INEC has moved to relocate polling units that are located in odd places ahead of the November 6th Governorship Election in Anambra.
This was made known by the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner Mr Mkpachukwu Orji on Monday where here spoke in a stakeholders forum in Awka where he said the commission is making moves to relocate over 1000 polling units in the state which are located in houses of Political Office Holders, Traditional Rulers , Churches amongst others, he said this is in the commission’s bid to expand voters access to polling units, ” Those polling units in such inappropriate places are not good for our elections, most times people see them as personal polling units, we want to make it accessible to all voters”.
The REC further said the Commission is making arrangements to increase the polling units in the state from 4,608 to 5,720 to give access to more voters, he also said that it’s a regrettable thing that only about 30% of registered voters cast their vote during the last election, he also said that voter registration will commence on 28th of June 2021,this is in order to give room for eligible voters who were not eligible during to last election to participate now.
While reacting the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu and Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters Mr Ifeatu Obiokoye, they said that INEC did not seek the opinion of the stakeholders in the state before making such decision that they would have made a lot of reasonable input for them in this matter.
